The Unit Commissioners provide several forms of support to the leaders of a unit (Pack, Troop, Varsity Team, Crew). All of these forms of support rest on a foundation of friendship and mutual respect established between the Commissioner and the Unit Leader(s).

The kinds of support provided include:

• Information about District and Council programs and activities
• Referral to Scouters charged with specific responsibilities within the District
• Encouragement to take action needed to form a strong unit and provide a solid program
• A friendly ear when the Unit Leader just needs someone to talk to
• Gentle persuasion to ensure Unit Leaders attend appropriate training
• Assistance as needed with specific tasks such a rechartering and recruitment activities
• Provision of information and options when the unit is facing leadership problems

The Commissioner’s role exists because turnover in unit leadership can create situations where those responsible for the unit don’t yet have the training and breadth of experience needed to handle all facets of unit operations well without a bit of friendly coaching and support.
